My name is Chance Browning, Senior Director of Programs at Caregiver Action Network. This session is a collaboration between Caregiver Action Network and USAID Staff Care. Your cameras and mics are off, but we encourage participation via the chat. We will address questions at the end, and if we miss anything, we’ll follow up via email.

Caregiver Action Network’s mission is to empower and support the nation’s 90 million family caregivers by providing resources, tools, and training to reduce caregiver stress. Many of us at CAN are caregivers ourselves, so we truly understand the day-to-day challenges. Today, we’ll explore key tools like patient file checklists, medication lists, and the importance of having a go-bag for emergencies. We’ll also discuss making the most of ER visits, effective communication with doctors, and symptom monitoring.

We’ll start with a poll question: "Do you currently use any technology in managing your loved one's care?" Options include yes, no, or not sure. Feel free to share what technology you use in the chat.

Let’s dive into the first tools: the patient file checklist and medication list, which are essential for all caregivers, no matter the caregiving scenario. These are available 24/7 on our website. The patient file checklist helps caregivers organize and update medical records and legal documents, which are critical for care teams. Medical records may include test results, vaccination records, and insurance information. It’s important to keep these documents easily accessible in emergencies, especially for ER visits.

Legal documents like DNRs (Do Not Resuscitate orders) and living wills should also be readily available. I shared a story about a caregiver whose father was rushed to the ER. She had his DNR in her car, but the doctor needed it immediately, which illustrates the importance of keeping legal documents on hand. Some caregivers prefer organizing documents in a binder, while others opt for digital storage.

Next, Nicole will discuss the medication list. This list should include all prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as supplements and vaccination information. Having a detailed medication list ensures that caregivers and care teams stay on the same page. Include medication names, dosages, administration methods, side effects, and pharmacy details. If medication schedules change, keeping accurate records is crucial, especially when managing multiple medications.

A go-bag is another critical tool for caregivers, especially in emergency situations. It should include documents like the patient file and medication list, as well as essentials like blankets, snacks, a phone charger, and a change of clothes. Regularly update the contents to ensure everything is current and ready to go at a moment’s notice.

When visiting the ER, it’s important to introduce yourself as the caregiver, have all necessary information at hand, and stay calm. Communicating symptoms without jumping to conclusions is vital. Reporting specific symptoms like "shortness of breath when walking" rather than diagnosing the issue ensures doctors have accurate information to work with.

We hope these tools will make caregiving a little easier. At the end of the session, we’ll address any questions and provide follow-up resources. Thank you for joining us, and please stay connected via our website and social media channels for more updates and tools to support family caregivers.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G8HYGxDqabQ/default.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G8HYGxDqabQ/mqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G8HYGxDqabQ/hqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G8HYGxDqabQ/sddefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G8HYGxDqabQ/maxresdefault.jpg
{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJcFJZcrKOXH6FdenoLrV5w#Organization
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJcFJZcrKOXH6FdenoLrV5w
Caregiver Action Network
As the nation’s leading family caregiver organization, Caregiver Action Network (CAN) is committed to enhancing the quality of life for millions of family caregivers across the United States.
